Fires of the Past
Back to History Section
January 30, 1948 fire broke out at 86-92 Genesee St. This fire was nick named the long block fire as it consumed several buildings. As you can see by the mountain of ice, the nights temperatures hit 30 degrees below zero. In the photo is Truck 4, a 1940 America LaFrance "Jox" 100 ft steel aerial. These trucks, by some today, are considered one of the ugliest trucks made in fire apparatus history but the design was actually one of the first cab over wheel which many custom designs utilize today. Thanks to Joe Morgia for sending this picture in.
The old Gardiner Building on Columbia and Genesee Streets suffers a 2 alarm fire in 1947. This is an interesting photo showing most of the companies that responded. from upper left is Engine2, Salvage2, Tower2, Engine10, Truck2, Truck3, Engine4, Engine5, and the aerial of Truck5.
1910, Lowery Waste Mill. As the old saying goes this is fighting fire with fire. Shown in the picture is steamer 5 in action. This building was unoccupied at the time and was a 2 alarm fire.
